Myth One

7 08 2006

It is a myth that Baba’s House is some terrible dungeon where people live imprisoned, in dread and fear. Baba clearly needs a new PR person who makes sure that happy snaps like this are circulated amongst those who would believe the tales circulated by rejected men who fear death.

Upon your arrival Baba asks you to fill out a registry book outlining your preferences. What kind of work will you offer to do for her? Create a category for yourself – for example gardener – and then post some ‘work’ under this category.

I’m applying for the position of household weaver and spinner. Patient as a she-spider, I sit by the fire (a coveted spot in this shadowy, cold forest!) with my spinning wheel or small loom. The threads I spin and the patterns I weave start out as simple lines, but then as I fill them in and weave in and out, a pattern is revealed. The pattern shifts each time anyone looks at it, the way the light shifts in the forest throughout the sun’s passage every day. You study the design and then blink, unsure of your vision. There are mountain ranges, river valleys, tossing seas, flocks of birds, a dragon — aren’t there? Now the vision fades, and the weave appears to be just threads intricately woven.

Loved reading this, and the picture is gorgeous, and has a great mood. Yep, Baba has been thoroughly misinterpreted, agree.

I offer Baba my knowledge of herbs, which I hope she will find useful. I will dig over and plant a herb garden for her, write a book of receipts (recipes), and set up a still room. She can put her feet up once in a while and enjoy some delicious herbal tea and lavender biscuits. (Sucking up? Moi?)

Is our dear Baba Yaga in need of a librarian? The library seemed a tad, scattered, to me the last time I peeked in there. So many lovely tomes, tablets, and scrolls, dusty and unkempt.

When Baba’s Librarian discovers an appropriate writing, map, or illustration she will share it with all of the Heros and Heroines.
